The Truth Will Set You Free!
ISAIAH 53:1-12 750 BC
53:1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

God’s Wrath Against Mankind

Romans 1:18 – For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all unGodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. Click to Listen

Romans 1:19 – Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

Romans 1:20 – For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Romans 1:21 – Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 1:22 – Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Romans 1:23 – And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Romans 1:24 – Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Romans 1:25 – Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Romans 1:26 – For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

Romans 1:27 – And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Romans 1:28 – And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Romans 1:29 – Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Romans 1:30 – Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Romans 1:31 – Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Romans 1:32 – Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Commentary

So nobody has a good excuse. What happened was this: People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn’t treat him like God, refusing to worship him, they trivialized themselves into silliness and confusion so that there was neither sense nor direction left in their lives.

They pretended to know it all, but were illiterate regarding life. They traded the glory of God who holds the whole world in his hands for cheap figurines you can buy at any roadside stand.

So God said, in effect, “If that’s what you want, that’s what you get.”

It wasn’t long before they were living in a pigpen, smeared with filth, filthy inside and out.

And all this because they traded the true God for a fake God, and worshiped the God they made instead of the God who made them the God we bless, the God who blesses us. Oh, yes!

Worse followed. Refusing to know God, they soon didn’t know how to be human either women didn’t know how to be women, men didn’t know how to be men.

Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another, women with women, men with men all lust, no love.

And then they paid for it, oh, how they paid for it emptied of God and love, Godless and loveless wretches.

Since they didn’t bother to acknowledge God, God quit bothering them and let them run loose.

And then all hell broke loose: rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing.

They made life hell on earth with their envy, wanton killing, bickering, and cheating.

Look at them: mean-spirited, venomous, fork-tongued God-bashers. Bullies, swaggerers, insufferable windbags!

They keep inventing new ways of wrecking lives. They ditch their parents when they get in the way.

Stupid, slimy, cruel, coldblooded. And it’s not as if they don’t know better. They know perfectly well they’re spitting in God‘s face.

And they don’t care worse, they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best!

Psalm 50:1-23
50:1 The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets.

50:2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.

50:3 Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages.

50:4 He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people:

50:5 “Gather to me this consecrated people, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

50:6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for he is a God of justice.

50:7 “Listen, my people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel: I am God, your God.

50:8 I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.

50:9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens,

50:10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.

50:11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine.

50:12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

50:13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?

50:14 “Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High,

50:15 and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

50:16 But to the wicked person, God says: “What right have you to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips?

50:17 You hate my instruction and cast my words behind you.

50:18 When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers.

50:19 You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit.

50:20 You sit and testify against your brother and slander your own mother’s son.

50:21 When you did these things and I kept silent, you thought I was exactly like you.

But I now arraign you and set my accusations before you.

50:22 “Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:

50:23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me, and to the blameless I will show my salvation.”
